Professional Development

We’re revamping the way we do things. In order to ensure you have access to professional development opportunities that genuinely help launch careers, develop new professional pathways, and enhance your connection to the industry, we are adding or reworking several courses and systems this year. Keep scrolling to see a brief breakdown of the new and exciting things happening within the IBAA professional development department.

New Learning Management System

The IBAA is happy to announce a new partnership with Neovation, a Canadian based learning solutions company. Through their LMS platform SmarterU, we will be looking to completely revamp our online course offerings and integrate it directly with our website. First steps will be to bring our current offerings up to speed, and later expand our offerings with member-focused training opportunities. Also expect to see our revamped online-focused CAIB program find its new home on SmarterU.

Read below for more details on a few course offerings that we are excited to integrate more fully with our members.

Broker 101

Broker 101 is the next step toward becoming a confident and capable insurance broker. Designed for new brokers who are already licensed or those looking to explore the industry, this course covers the broker essentials that aren’t addressed during the licensing process. Course information is conveniently packaged into eight topic-specific modules so students can learn at their own pace. Broker 101 is entirely online, self-directed, and available 24/7 through our learning management system.

What Broker 101 Covers

  • Module 1: Introduction to the World of Insurance
  • Module 2: Broker Legal Duties
  • Module 3: The Customer Experience
  • Module 4: Dealing with Different Clients
  • Module 5: Dealing with Different Clients
  • Module 6: Building Your Book of Business
  • Module 7: Choosing the Right Product to Sell
  • Module 8: The Claims Process

Students who complete the full Broker 101 program will receive 13.5 CE credits toward a General insurance license.

CAIB Designation

The CAIB program is a nationally recognized professional designation and licensing equivalency that provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of all aspects of property and casualty insurance. Many students prefer to opt for their CAIB designation rather than a traditional licensing path due to the higher success rate, national recognition, and the deeper level of general insurance knowledge provided by the program.

Alternative Licensing Path

As of October 2020, the Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) recognizes the CAIB program as containing equivalent education to that of their general insurance licensing exams. The AIC accepts a passing grade from the following combined CAIB modules as equivalent to their licensing exams:

  • CAIB 1 & 2 = Level 1
  • CAIB 1, 2, & 3 = Level 2
  • CAIB 1, 2, 3, & 4 = Level 3

Upcoming CAIB Refresh

The CAIB program is currently going through a major refresh. The updated program will be hosted on our new LMS platform. More information about this will be made available in the future.

This 5-part series will be intended for brokers with an intermediate understanding of the industry and will comprehensively break down the market of Farm insurance.
