The CAIB program is a nationally recognized professional designation and licensing equivalency that provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of all aspects of property and casualty insurance. Many students prefer to opt for their CAIB designation rather than a traditional licensing path due to the higher success rate, national recognition, and the deeper level of general insurance knowledge provided by the program.

Licensing Equivalencies
Updated Content
In January 2026 the IBAA will be rolling out a completely revamped and updated CAIB New Edition 1.0. Familiarize yourself with some of the major changes here.
- Revamped Content - The CAIB hasn't been updated since 2013. This update will completely revamp and modernize the content.
- All-inclusive Purchases - Purchases will include the textbook, the full self-directed web course, and enrollment into the exam. No more buying each item piece-by-piece.
- Comprehensive Online Program - Each purchase will include access to the online content which will include all the practice material you will need.
- Exam Format Update - Each exam has been restructured to share in similar formatting. Each exam will include multiple-choice questions, definitions, and short answer.
- CAIB 2/3 Format Changes - The content provided within modules 2 and 3 has been re-arranged. To understand how this might affect you, please check out the CAIB (2013) tab.
If you're just looking to purchase the current CAIB modules and prepare for an exam please keep scrolling.
CAIB 2013 Edition
Upon launching the revamped CAIB program in January 2026, we will be immediately ceasing the sale of all 2013 CAIB modules with minor exceptions:
- Exams - The old exam will remain available to those who have purchased and studied using the older material until December 31st, 2026. Failing to complete the older exam within this 12 month time-frame will mean that you will need to re-enroll from scratch within the new program.
- CAIB 2/3 - The content within CAIB 2 and 3 has been reorganized. What this means is that if you have previously completed the CAIB 2 or 3 exam, but not the other, you will be required to complete the older version of the incomplete module. Failing to complete the both CAIB 2/3 by Dec 31, 2026 will require you to retake both within the new program.
To better understand the CAIB 2/3 situation please refer to this graph:

Licensing Equivalencies
With the updated CAIB, licensing equivalencies remain unchanged. The Alberta Insurance Council (AIC) recognizes the CAIB program as containing equivalent education to that of their general insurance licensing exams. The AIC accepts a passing grade from the following combined CAIB modules as equivalent to their licensing exams:
- CAIB 1 & 2 = Level 1
- CAIB 1, 2, & 3 = Level 2
- CAIB 1, 2, 3, & 4 = Level 3
During the application process you will be required to provide your CAIB transcript proving successful completion to the AIC. Your transcript can be found on your profile alongside your CE Certificates. For further details on the process please review the official ruling provided by the AIC. Having a license does not count toward completion of the CAIB.
