This course will focus on the science of natural disasters, and how they affect western Canada--including tropical cyclones as they have a downstream impact on the Canadian insurance market. This course will focus on the following:

  • How insurances has evolved as a result of natural disasters (particularly in other countries) and how that could happen in Canada
  • The different types of natural disasters in Canada and how they impact us
  • How to protect property & people from natural disaster risk
  • How natural disasters impact insurance premiums & policy wordings

Recommended for all insurance industry from junior to senior experience, in broking, underwriting and claims.

Instructor | Kevin Lea, BComm, CIP, CAIB, CRIM

Kevin is the President of Fuse Insurance, a Brokerage of the Year award recipient by Insurance Business Canada in 2019, 2022 and 2023. He is also the Past President of the Professional Young Insurance Brokers of Alberta, a current board member of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta and a current board member of the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada's Technology Committee. Prior to cofounding Fuse Insurance in 2017, Kevin was a Partner & Large Commercial Producer at Rogers Insurance, one of Alberta's largest brokerages. During his time at Roger's he set records for being a top producer, won the Insurance Business Canada Young Gun & Elite Broker awards, and was also recognized as a one of Canada's Top 10 Brokers Under 40. Before moving to the brokerage side of the industry, he was a multi-line commercial claims adjuster for Federated Insurance. A graduate of the University of Calgary's Risk Management & Insurance program, he also holds his CIP, CAIB and CRM designations. Apart from being an insurance nerd, he also enjoys golf, cooking and travel.
